Twostepcub's Biggest Hits of 2024: Part 7 - #40 to #31...

I'm back with another installment in my (late) year-end countdown of the biggest songs on my weekly personal music chart for 2024, i.e. the hits that went the highest and/or stuck around the longest. You can catch up with the rest of the series so far by clicking here. And now we enter the top-40...

#40 - Not Like Us - Kendrick Lamar
         from the single (2024)
         2scchart peak: #2 (one week)
         Weeks on the chart: 25
         Points: 1650

We start off with the shot heard around the world, started by Drake on an offhand verse in last year's "First Person Shooter" and definitely ended by this jam that took this dis record and made it the song of the summer. Historians will be discussing this brain-powered takedown for decades to come, and Drake's career (thankfully) will never be the same.

#39 - Pretty Little Poison - Warren Zeiders
from the album Pretty Little Poison (2024)
         2scchart peak: #15 (two weeks)
         Weeks on the chart: 27
         Points: 1671

The long-haired country rock newcomer who got noticed by the general public after his shirtless pics got Kelly Clarkson all hot and bothered. He hasn't been able to follow-up this longer-than-usual success lingered on country radio.

#38 - The Glass - Foo Fighters
from the album But Here We Are (2023)
          2scchart peak: #6 (one week)
          Weeks on the chart: 23
          Points: 1675

Never idolize your heroes, they will always let you down. The Fighters were riding high in the beginning of the year with their third #1 Mainstream Rock hit from their first album after the death of Taylor Hawkins, But Here We Are, but by summer we were rocked with the news that leader and "all around good guy" Dave Grohl fathered a child outside of his marriage. Oof. But I don't feel this is their swan song, though it sure sounds as such.

#37 - Houdini - Dua Lipa
from the album Radical Optimism (2024)
         2scchart peak: #5 (two weeks)
Weeks on the chart (in 2024): 28 (was on for two weeks in 2023)
         Points: 1684

This 80's synth-pop throwback brought Dua back from her biggest success that was impossible to continue, though this tried valiantly but low-key.

#36 - I Am Not Okay - Jelly Roll
from the album Beautifully Broken (2024)
         2scchart peak: #3 (one week)
Weeks on the chart (in 2024): 22 (still charting)
         Points: 1694

The rotund rapper-turned-singer went all in on the poor guy optimisn track on this ballad that caught fire on pop and country stations alike. The record has a stately but heartfelt devotion to its premise that yes, everything is gonna be alright. I only wish I could believe him.

#35 - Where It Ends - Bailey Zimmerman
from the album Religiously: The Album (2023)
          2scchart peak: #8 (two weeks)
          Weeks on the chart: 28
          Points: 1702

Raspy-voiced country artist gets extra bitter in this break-up barnburner where he's given too many chances.

#34 - What Was I Made For? - Billie Eilish
from the album Barbie (Original Soundtrack) (2023)
2scchart peak (in 2024): #1 (two weeks) (was #1 for two weeks in 2023)
Weeks on the chart (in 2024): 21 (was on the chart for 19 weeks in 2023)
          Points: 1721

This was the song that topped the chart as "2023 chart year" was ending, and stayed for an equal amout of time on top in the new one that December, and took an Oscar and a Grammy in the process. This was my #31 song of 2023, and in a just world would be #1. Simply heartbreakingly beautiful and musically perfect.

#33 - On My Mama - Victoria Monet
from the album Jaguar II (2023)
          2scchart peak: #8 (two weeks)
Weeks on the chart (in 2024): 24 (was on the chart for six weeks in 2023)
          Points: 1783

The songwriter-for-hire turned Grammy Best New Artist winner slid into our musical DMs with this smooth as silk self-help jam.

#32 - Ain't No Love In Oklahoma - Luke Combs
from the album Twisters: The Album (Original Soundtrack) (2024)
         2scchart peak: #5 (two weeks)
         Weeks on the chart: 24
         Points: 1806

Luke was pretty prolific this year, releasing a father's day-themed album that didn't even send any big singles on the charts, but also took the bluesy-rock train Chris Stapleton's been riding with this dramatic number from the tornado popcorn movie of the summer.

#31 - One More Time - blink-182
from the album One More Time (2023)
2scchart peak (in 2024): #2 (one week) (was #2 for two weeks in 2023)
Weeks on the chart (in 2024): 27 (was on the chart for ten weeks in 2023)
         Points: 1838

After Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker reunited with Tom DeLonge for a second time and ended up with the #51 on my 2023 list, "Edging", they got serious with themselves with this reflective and honest look at their past in this ballad, which was on last year's "also ran" list at #121.

I'll be back with a double-shot of this year's tour champion, a viral hit for some Stranger Things star, and a superstar and the country horse she rode in on.
