Twostepcub's Biggest Hits of 2024: Part Four - #70 - #61...
Welcome back, it's time for part four of my (late) year-end countdown of the biggest songs of 2024 on my weekly personal music chart. You can catch up with the rest of the series by clicking here. Let's get moving...
#70 - Agora Hills - Doja Cat
from the album Scarlet (2023)
2scchart peak: #32 (two weeks)
Weeks on the chart: 30
Points: 1096
Yeah, this is on here because it just wouldn't go away on the charts, but it's not the most offensive Doja Cat vehicle out there. Like background music for a night cafe. It is kind of scary that the Agoura Hills area is currently under siege by the California wildfires.

#69 - Beautiful People (Stay High) - Black Keys
from the album Ohio Players (2024)
2scchart peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks on the chart: 15
Points: 1101
On the other hand, this jam from the indie-rock duo spent half the time on the charts with me wishing it was more. They haven't done me wrong yet, and this is such a fun driving song na-na-na's and all.
#68 - Where The Wild Things Are - Luke Combs
from the album Gettin' Old (2023)
2scchart peak: #5 (two weeks)
Weeks on the chart: 15
Points: 1104
A compulsive driving story-song, this fatalistic but upbeat track is one of Luke's best. The chorus in particular is so rousing that the twist that was snuck into the final chorus hits so much harder.
#67 - feelslikeimfallinginlove - Coldplay
from the album Moon Music (2024)
2scchart peak: #15 (one week)
Weeks on the chart: 18
Points: 1106
Sure, this song has its bad moments (the la la na na fill ins on the chorus are just lazy) but on the whole it's not the worst thing they've done, but definitely far from their best. So take that as you will (I was surprised on its longevity in the various formats, but being a band too big to fail, a lot of money was pumped in there, including the video).
#66 - Murder On The Dancefloor - Sophie Ellis-Bextor
from the albums Read My Lips (2001) and Saltburn (Original Soundtrack) (2024)
2scchart peak: #8 (three weeks)
Weeks on the chart: 16
Points: 1118
23 years after this song from the British dance-pop siren's debut album made the UK top ten (and made my chart pre-blog-time), the movie Saltburn dug this nugget back up for its final scene, and the resulting buzz not only deservedly gave American audiences exposure to this classic, but also enough for the rock duo Royel Otis to also have a rock radio hit with it. Thanks be to Gregg Alexander of the best one-off project in modern pop history, New Radicals, for writing and producing this.
#65 - Dirt Cheap - Cody Johnson
from the album Leather (2023)
2scchart peak: #13 (one week)
Weeks on the chart: 17
Points: 1119
The plotline of the "big commercial real estate guys" trying to buy out the rural farmer has been done time and time again in country music (and more than once this year), but Cody had the better of them, exuding the bittersweet pain of memories and tenacity to the land in his weary vocals, much like Tim McGraw did back in the day.
#64 - Obsessed - Olivia Rodrigo
from the album Guts (Spilled) (2024)
2scchart peak: #9 (one week)
Weeks on the chart: 17
Points: 1129
Olivia's much better when she's snarly and bitter, and this reverse mirror image of Sabrina Carpenter's "Taste" was much better executed, with the crazy infatuation just spiraling through the rock crunch.
#63 - Snooze - SZA
from the album SOS (2022)
2scchart peak (in 2024): #18 (two weeks) (was #3 for seven weeks in 2023)
Weeks on the chart (in 2024): 18 (was on for 25 weeks in 2023)
Points: 1136
This lush number from SZA fell asleep at #1 on Billboard's R&B chart for months, and my #21 song of last year is back (if the points were combined, it'd be in the top ten).
#62 - Strangers - Kenya Grace
from the EP The After Taste (2024)
2scchart peak (in 2024): #8 (four weeks) (was #8 for one week in 2023)
Weeks on the chart (in 2024): 15 (was on for ten weeks in 2023)
Points: 1142
This jam from the British newcomer would've felt at home in 1983, but still feels in the now, with the atmospheric production framing Grace's cool vocals quite nicely.
#61 - Heartless - Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats
from the album South Of Here (2024)
2scchart peak: #9 (two weeks)
Weeks on the chart: 16
Points: 1149
The blues-rock neo-traditionalists took a welcome turn from their brash swing-like swagger for a more reflective album and this just sounds more and more beautiful on each listen. The music video is such a thinker as well.
I'll be back with the theater-girl gone big, a welcome White return, and an unlikely two-week pairing.
