Songoftheday 10/17/24 - I woke up early this morning 'round 4 a.m with the moon shining bright, as headlights on the interstate I pulled the covers over my head...
"You'll Think Of Me" - Keith Urban
from the album Golden Road (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #24 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song comes from Keith Urban, whose third album Golden Road had scored three huge country radio hits that crossed over to the top-40 on Billbaord magazine's Hot 100 with "Somebody Like You", "Raining On Sunday", and "Who Wouldn't Want To Be Me". For the fourth and final single from the record, Urban released the adult-pop ballad "You'll Think Of Me". Written by Darrell Brown, Ty Lacy, and Dennis Matkosky, the lyrics have Keith play the recipient of a bad breakup, where she has moved on but he clearly is not. He's laying in bed filled with sadness and bitterness, with the titular tagline delivered more with resignation than threateningly. The production from Urban with Dann Huff is somber but soul-easing, like Keith is slowly convincing himself that this is the end. The music video has Urban pouting in an empty house, but seems to portend a Sixth Sense-style twist at the end...
"You'll Think Of Me" became the fourth single from Golden Road to reach the top-40 on Billboard's Hot 100 in May of 2004. On the radio, the song spent two weeks at #1 on the Country Songs airplay chart, but also was his big crossover to pop stations, where he made the Mainstream Top-40 chart at #38, the older-skewing Adult Top-40 list at #6, and most notable spent over a year on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") tally, taking two months (eight weeks) at #2. Internationally, the single hit #2 on the Canadian country chart, and even popped on to the British singles chart at #88. For some reason I cannot find (most likely because of a "live" version), "You'll Think Of Me" was nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 2005, losing to Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying", but then winning the following year in the same category.
Keith will be back to the series.
