Songoftheday 10/11/24 - I'm feeling sexy I wanna hear you say my name boy, if you can reach me you can feel my burnin' flame...

"Naughty Girl" - Beyonce
from the album Dangerously In Love (2003)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 18

Today's song is from Beyonce, whose debut solo album Dangerously In Love had already spun off a pair of #1 hits on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 with "Crazy In Love" and "Baby Boy", as well as a top-ten follow-up with "Me, Myself, & I".  The fourth single from the record was the slinky and seductive "Naughty Girl". Written by the singer with cousin Angela Beyince and co-producer Scott Storch, Beyonce also interpolates a little of Donna Summer's disco class "Love To Love You Baby" in her  intro and bridge sections, giving Summer and co-writers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte credit as well. The lyrics are quite simple, she's offering to be the "bad girl" and bring her female friends to the "party". How deep that would in entail (in one to Puff Daddy) is up for interpretation. The vaguely Middle Eastern-sounding production (a trademark for Storch) makes it suggest a belly dancing affair. Beyonce's voice sells this better than others could, using her high register to the greatest effect. The music video puts her and her posse in the club, but instead of Jay-Z, Bey is paired with Usher, who obviously can compete with her moves in droves....

"Naughty Girl" became the fourth top ten hit from Dangerously In Love on the Hot 100 in June of 2004, while peaking at #8 on their R&B Singles chart. On the radio, the song hit #2 on the Mainstream Top-40 chart, #8 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop airplay list, and spent a week at #1 on the dance/R&B-oriented Rhythmic format. The remixes of the track, done by Victor Calderone and Mac Quayle among others, helped it top the Dance Club Play chart for a week as well as on the Dance Airplay list for three weeks. Internationally, the single hit #1 on the Canada radio chart (and #2 on their sales list), reached the top ten in New Zealand (#6), Australia (#9), and the United Kingdom (#10), and made the top-40 in Greece (#11), the Netherlands (#14), Ireland (#14), Belgium (#14 Flanders/#14 Wallonia), Norway (#14), Denmark (#15), Germany (#16), France (#18), Switzerland (#18), Spain (#19), Italy (#23), Austria (#29), and Sweden (#32).

The title track "Dangerously In Love 2" (to discern it from the Destiny's Child track of the same name) went to #57 on the Hot 100 and #17 on the R&B Singles chart, after winning the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Also, after taking the Best Duo/Group R&B Vocal Grammy, her cover of "The Closer I Get To You" with Luther Vandross rose to #62 on the R&B Singles chart.

Beyonce will be back to the series, of course.

Here's the remix from Calderone and Quayle that helped the song top Billboard's dance charts...

Next up, Beyonce performing the song on the Pepsi Smash TV show...

Lastly, the single sported a "remix" with rapper Lil' Flip, who will be on this series really soon...

Tomorrow I'll roll out my top hits of the past week, then on Monday Song of the Day will return with that featured rapper who lost at Super Mario, possibly.
