Songoftheday 10/16/24 - Girl I see you in them apple bottom jeans, chinchilla on your back I wanna know your name...

from the album Kamikaze (2004)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (five weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 18

Today's song comes from rapper Twista, who scored a #1 hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in the beginning of 2004 with "Slow Jams", which featured and up and coming Kanye West. West also co-wrote and produced Twista's follow-up single, "Overnight Celebrity", and performed on the track although not appearing on the single label as a feature (but he initially was on the Billboard chart listing). The "Celebrity" in this case is a woman Twista's trying to get the mack on, promising her fame and riches by getting with him. The production from West gives the chipmunked treatment to slow jam album cut "Cause I Love You" from Lenny Williams of Tower Of Power which seems to relay a gravitas that the verses definitely don't reflect. But the violin from Israeli-American Miri Ben-Ari is a nice touch. All in all, it's just a play which you know won't be carried out after she gives in...

"Overnight Celebrity" scored a second top ten hit for Twista in May of 2004, while spending three weeks at #2 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart, and topped the Rap Singles chart for eight weeks. On the radio, the song went to #23 on the Mainstream Top-40 chart, spent three weeks at #1 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay list, and hit #3 on the dance/R&B-oriented Rhythmic format. Internationally, the single reached the top-40 in New Zealand (#12), the United Kingdom (#16), and Canada (#26 Radio). At the Grammy Awards in 2005, "Overnight Celebrity" was nominated for Best Solo Rap Performance (probs why Kanye was listed on this), losing to Jay-Z for "99 Problems".

Both Twista and the album will be back to the series.
