Songoftheday 7/31/18 - Every time you said goodbye to me another girl you'd hurry off to see, but I'll get over you I will get over you...

"You Lied To Me" - Cathy Dennis
from the album Into The Skyline (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #32 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 5

Today's song of the day comes from dance-pop singer/songwriter Cathy Dennis, whose debut album Move To This had landed her four top ten pop hits in American with "Too Many Walls", "Touch Me (All Night Long)", "Just Another Dream", and her collaboration with D-Mob, "C'Mon and Get My Love". In 1992, Cathy released her sophomore effort, Into The Skyline, with more of a direction towards adult-pop and house music to capture the American audience she gained from her debut set. The first single from the record was "You Lied To Me", one of those house music excursions, written by the singer along with remixer/producers Shep Pettibone and Tony Shimkin. Cooing a sassy toss-off to an unfaithful lover over a rolling bassline, it did bring her attention in the clubs...

"You Lied To Me" became Dennis' fifth and so far final top-40 pop hit in America in October of 1992. The remixes on the CD/12" vinyl single helped the track climb to #12 on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart. Internationally, the song reached the top-40 in her native Britain at #34, and just missed the mark in Canada at #46.

Her followup single was the Amy Grant-ish "Irresistible", which rose to #6 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, but stalled down at #61 on the pop Hot 100 (though it did go to #23 in Canada and #24 in the UK). That was followed by "Falling", which scored another top-40 hit in Britain at #32. "Moments Of Love", a lush ballad, was a big success on easy listening radio, going to #8 on the Adult Contemporary chart; lastly another collab with D-Mob, "Why", was her highest-charting song from the album in the UK, peaking at #23. At the same time, Cathy sang back-up on alt-rap duo P.M. Dawn's "Looking Through Patient Eyes", which hit the American top-5. After a potential third album Inspiration was dumped by the label, Dennis finally re-emerged in 1996 with Am I The Same Girl, her third and so far most recent album. Although the Brit-pop-influenced record failed in the States, it did better in the UK, with a cover of the Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset" almost putting her in the top ten at #11. Her last of the three singles from the record, "When Dreams Turn To Dust", just missed the UK top-40 at #43.

Since then, Cathy has gone to have much more fame from being a songwriter. In 2001 she co-wrote the massive Kylie Minogue single "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", as well as the follow-up "Come Into My World". That latter song won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording, as did her song for Britney Spears, "Toxic", that same year. She also penned Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl", as well as write the theme for the American Idol franchise. Most recently, she co-wrote and sang on dance act Galantis' "Runaway (You & I)", which went to #4 in the UK and earned her another nom for a Grammy.
