Songoftheday 7/19/18 - And I was lost for words in your arms, attempting to make sense of my aching heart...

"Not Enough Time" - INXS
from the albums Welcome To Wherever You Are and Barcelona Gold (both 1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #28 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7

Today's song of the day comes from the Australian rock giants INXS, whose X album opening up the 90's decade rewarded them with a pair of top ten pop hits in America with "Suicide Blonde" and "Disappear". In 1991, the band released their first concert album, Live Baby Live, and from it the added studio cut "Shining Star" (not to be confused with the Earth Wind & Fire classic) was released as a single; it climbed to #4 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart and #14 on the Mainstream Rock radio list. The following year, INXS recorded and released their eighth studio album Welcome To Wherever You Are. The first release from the record, the rock banger "Heaven Sent", wasn't released as a physical single in the U.S., but was promoted to rock radio, and spent a week at #2 on BIllboard's Modern Rock chart while also making it to #4 on the Mainstream Rock tally (it also reached #13 in both Australia and Canada, and got to #31 in the UK). Another Europe/Down Under-only release, "Baby Don't Cry", got to #20 in Britain, #30 in Australia, and #34 in New Zealand. The third release from the record, the midtempo brooding "Not Enough Time", was the one the band promoted most to pop radio in the States. Written by lead singer Michael Hutchence and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, it would be Michael's final appearance on the Hot 100 proper (he would be back with a top-40 airplay hit) in America. It was also co-opted for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, appearing as well on their official music album "soundtrack"...

"Not Enough Time" became the sole American top-40 pop hit from Welcome To Wherever You Are in October of 1992. The song spent five weeks at #2 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, while reaching #13 on their Mainstream Rock format list. Internationally, the single peaked at #7 in Canada.

Their next single, "Taste It", missed the pop Hot 100 in the U.S. by one notch (#101), but raced to #5 on the Modern Rock chart. The final release from the album, "Beautiful Girl", was a bigger success, almost reaching the top-40 in America (#46), hitting #10 on the Modern Rock chart, and getting to #9 in Canada.
