Songoftheday 11/2/17 - Forever i will love you forever i will be true, forever i'll always be here by your side...

"Never Gonna Let You Down" - Surface
from the album 3 Deep (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's song of the day comes from the soul trio Surface, whose wedding-ready single "The First Time" rode all the way to #1 on the pop and R&B charts in the winter of 1991. Their follow-up, "All I Want Is You", climbed to #8 on the R&B tally, but somehow didn't even make a dent on the pop Hot 100 (even with Regina Belle providing backup). The band rebounded with their third release, the smooth love ballad "Never Gonna Let You Down". Written by the group's Bernard Jackson, it would become their final pop success...

"Never Gonna Let You Down" became Surface's fourth and last top-40 pop hit in July of 1991. The single climbed to #24 on Billboard's R&B chart, and crossed over to #17 on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio tally. A fourth release from 3 Deep, "You're The One", reached the R&B top-40 at #35.

Later that year, Surface released a greatest hits compilation including a new song, "...A Nice Time For Lovin'", that would be a minor soul chart hit at #52. They would split up in 1994, reuniting in 1998 for an independent album, Love Zone. Member Ed Townsend would pass away in 2005.

Up tomorrow: A Christian pop singer finds his location.
