Robbed hit of the week 11/13/17 - Damian Dame's "Exclusivity"...
"Exclusivity" - Damian Dame
from the album Damian Dame (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #42
This week's "robbed hit" comes from the R&B duo Damian Dame, who came together in the late 1980s when soul singer Debra "Deah Dame" Hurd joined singer/songwriter Damian Broadus in Georgia, becoming the first act for the production team of Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and L.A. Reid's new record label LaFace. Hurd had previously been a solo artist, releasing an album in 1983 that sent two singles into the R&B chart, including the #50 hit "Hug Me, Squeeze Me". The pair named themselves Damian Dame combining their nicknames, and their self-titled debut album arrives in 1991. The first single from the record was "Exclusivity", written by Broadus with Babyface and L.A., who produced the track...
While "Exclusivity" topped Billboard's R&B chart for two weeks, the single stopped two notches short of their pop top 40 in June of 1991. The remixes on the 12" vinyl single helped it show on the Dance Club Play chart at #45. The duo's second single, "Right Down To It", followed all the way up to #2 on the R&B chart, but stalled down at #90 on the pop Hot 100. A third release from Damian Dame, "Gotta Learn My Rhythm", peaked at #20 on the R&B list.
Before they could release a second album, Hurd was tragically killed in an auto crash in 1994. Broadus, who had continued to work on the set as a solo artist, passed away from cancer right after its release two years later.
