Songoftheday 9/7/17 - You took my love and I'm willing, there's no limit to the love I'm giving...
"Something In My Heart" - Michel'le
from the album Michel'le (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #31 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 5
Today's song of the day comes from R&B singer Michel'le, whose self-title debut album had scored her a pair of R&B/pop crossover hits with "Nicety" and the pop top ten debut of "No More Lies". A third release, "Keep Watchin'", was a really enjoyable funky dance track, but stalled down at #65 on the R&B chart and missed the pop list altogether. As a fourth release, Michel'le released a break-up ballad, "Something In My Heart", which showcased her powerful singing voice to great effect, and was the album's "showstopper". Written by the singer with boyfriend and N.W.A. member Dr. Dre, it would be her final solo pop success...
"Something In My Heart" became Michel'le's third and final top-40 pop hit in March of 1991. The single also climbed to #2 for a week on Billboard's R&B chart. A fifth release from the debut album, "If?" with Michael Holmes, was a moderate R&B hit at #22, but didn't nick the pop Hot 100.
In 1996, she returned to the R&B top-40 as a guest on rap act Tha Dogg Pound's "Let's Play House" (#21), which almost got into the pop top-40 at #45. But by the time Michel'le's sophomore album Hung Jury came out, it struck out with radio and only managed to squeak on to the R&B albums chart at #56. She left the label and Dre, though she ended up marrying Dre's old boss Suge Knight for a while. She most recently appeared on all three seasons of the reality show R&B Divas: Los Angeles.
