Songoftheday 8/6/17 - Deep in the heart love has many ways, of touching your emotions taking control of you...
"Love Makes Things Happen" - Pebbles featuring Babyface
from the album Always (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #13 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9
Today's song of the day comes from R&B/dance singer Pebbles, who had landed a third top ten pop hit in the fall of 1990 with "Giving You The Benefit". The follow-up single from her Always album would be the mid-tempo ballad "Love Makes Things Happen". Written by her husband and producer L.A. Reid with his work partner Babyface, who duets with Pebbles on the song, the lush soft-pop production overlays lyrics telling you that true love will come from anywhere...
"Love Makes Things Happen" became Pebbles' fourth (and so far last) top 40 pop hit in February of 1991. The song also was her fourth to go to #1 on Billboard's R&B chart spending two weeks there, while it also crossed over to their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio list at #24 (her only charting hit on that format). Internationally, the track was a minor hit in Canada at #91.
The third single from Always, "Backyard", featured female rap group Salt-N-Pepa, and while it climbed to #4 on the R&B chart, it stalled down at #73 on the pop Hot 100. (It featured a pre-TLC cameo from Left Eye and T-Boz). The title track ballad from the album came as the fourth and final release from Always, and hit #13 R&B but missed the pop chart altogether.
Forming her own company, Pebbitone, Pebbles helped the ascent of TLC, though that ended up turning sour over money by the middle of the decade. After a third album, Straight From My Heart, ended up after her breaking up romantically and professionally with Reid, the single "Are You Ready" only managed to get to the R&B top-40 at #38. She left the mainstream music scene shortly after, re-emerging in the gospel world in the next decade, scoring a hit album in that genre in 2008.
