Songoftheday 8/4/17 - So much to believe in we were lost in time, everything I needed I feel in your eyes...
"Where Does My Heart Beat Now" - Celine Dion
from the album Unison (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 15
Today's song of the day comes from soft-pop queen Celine Dion, who started out as a Francophone child star in Canada, after her family sent tapes of hers to manager René Angélil. She recorded eight albums in French in the 1980's, which were very successful in Quebec. She also gained worldwide exposure participating in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 as a "ringer" for Switzerland, and won the contest with the song "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi" ("Don't Leave Without Me"). Subsequently, the track hit the charts in Continental Europe, paving the way for her to pursue a career singing in English.
Celine released her first English-language album, Unison, in 1990. After a couple of singles released in Canada, "(If There Was) Any Other Way" and the title track, which made the top-40 there, she put out her debut radio offering in America in the fall of that year. "Where Does My Heart Beat Now", written by Robert White Johnson and Taylor Rhodes, was a full-force power-ballad that showed off her vocal range to the best effect...
"Where Does My Heart Beat Now" became Celine's first top ten pop hit in the U.S. in March of 1991. The song also spent a week at #2 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the song reached the top 40 in Norway (#3), Ireland (#13), France (#20), the Netherlands (#24), Belgium (#23), New Zealand (#36), and her native Canada, where it peaked as the third release from the album at #22.
