Songoftheday 6/3/17 - Lately I've been trying to figure out your mind and why you keep dissin' on me poor little me...
"Giving You The Benefit" - Pebbles
from the album Always (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13
Today's song of the day comes from the R&B/dance singer Perri Reid, aka "Pebbles", who landed a pair of top-5 pop hits from her eponymous debut album, "Girlfriend" and "Mercedes Boy", in 1988. A third single from the set, "Take Your Time", spent two weeks at #3 on the R&B chart, but missed the pop Hot 100 completely, while "Do Me Right" was a minor R&B hit at #67. Two years later, Pebbles, she had married one of her producers, L.A. Reid, and was ready to release her sophomore effort, Always. The first single from the album, "Giving You The Benefit", was a dance-pop nugget in the Paula Abdul vein written by produced by Reid with Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds...
"Giving You The Benefit" became Pebbles' third (and last) top-ten pop hit in October of 1990. The single also was her third to top the R&B chart in Billboard, spending three weeks at #1 (her longest stay). The remixes on the 12" vinyl and CD single helped the song climb to #10 on the Dance Club Play chart. Internationally the single was a minor hit in Australia (#48) and the UK (#73).
