"Feels Good" - Tony! Toni! Toné!
from the album The Revival (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 17

Today's song of the day comes from the trio Tony! Toni! Toné!, who came together in the late 1980's under the production wing of Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, who were part of the Club Nouveau act for a brief moment before. The three members, none named Tony or any variation thereof, released their debut album Who? in 1988, and while it sent four singles into the top ten on Billboard's R&B chart, only "Little Walter", which topped that list, made it on to the pop Hot 100, peaking right under the top-40 at #47. Two years later, brothers Dwayne and Raphael Wiggins along with cousin Tim Riley, came back with their sophomore effort The Revival. The lead single, "The Blues", scored them a second #1 R&B hit, but again they stopped short of the pop top-40 at #46 in the summer of 1990. The next release, however, would reap rewards in a big way. "Feels Good", written by the trio with Carl Wheeler, was an uptempo new jack-ish celebration of life, and while the lyrics may be simplistic, pop radio got into the groove maybe because of it, with a rap middle featuring Tupac Shakur's stepbrother Maurice Williams (Mopreme Shakur) before the former was even a big star...

"Feels Good" became Tony! Toni! Toné!'s first top-40 pop hit, reaching the big ten in November of 1990. The single also topped the R&B chart in Billboard for two weeks, while it was their biggest hit on their Dance Club Play list, climbing to #3. Internationally, the song went to #8 in New Zealand, while being a minor hit in Canada (#68), Australia (#89), and the UK (#85).
