Songoftheday 8/2/15 - Remember when we held on in the rain, the night we almost lost it...

"Didn't We Almost Have It All" - Whitney Houston
from the album Whitney (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's Song of the Day comes from Whitney Houston, who solidified her place in the A-level pop stars as her second album Whitney debuted all the way in the #1 position on Billboard's albums chart in the U.S., while first single "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" topped the singles chart for two weeks. Her follow-up was a break-up ballad written by Michael Masser and Will Jennings, the latter who collaborated with Steve Winwood on his Back In The High Life album from the same time. "Didn't We Almost Have It All" had just the right mix of "money notes" and non-syrupy lyrics to rank among her best slow songs...

"Didn't We Almost..." became Whitney's fifth consecutive #1 pop hit in America in September of 1987. The song also reached the top of Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") chart and #2 on their R&B list. Internationally, the single went to #2 in Canada, while only reaching the top-20 in the UK (#14), Germany (#20), Spain (#12), and the Netherlands (#20).

Whitney didn't film a video for the single, but her amazing live rendition ended up being rotated on MTV and VH1...

Up tomorrow: the most revered of the jam bands uses their age to score their only top-40 pop hit.
