Songoftheday 2/13/15 - All the old paintings on the tomb they do the sand dance, don't you know...

"Walk Like An Egyptian" - Bangles
from the album Different Light (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (four weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 15

Today's Song of the Day comes from the female rock band Bangles, whose breakthrough album Different Light had already spun off a top-10 hit with their Prince-written song "Manic Monday", and top-40 follow-up with "If She Knew What She Wants". The third single was a quirky novelty song written by Liam Sternberg, "Walk Like An Egyptian", and the vaguely un-PC track became their biggest hit, featuring lead vocals shared by three of the four members...

"Walk Like An Egyptian" ended up topping the American pop chart for a month in December of 1986, while also nicking the Dance Club Play chart in Billboard at #46. Internationally it was just as successful, topping the singles charts in Australia, Germany, Canada, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and reaching #3 on the British list.
