Songoftheday 12/12/17 - You set fire then tell me you're leaving, just so you can lead me on some other night...

"Just Like You" - Robbie Nevil
from the album Day 1 (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #25 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song of the day is from pop singer/songwriter Robbie Nevil, who had scored his fourth top-40 hit in the winter of 1989 with "Back On Holiday". Two years later, he released his third studio album Day 1, with "Just Like You" as the first single. Written and produced by Nevil, it had the same late-80s cadence seen in a score of comedy movies in that decade, with a little punchier production and more prominent guitar fuzz to keep it up to date. Apparently the song is about a guy who wants to be just as manipulative as his lover, but with his long hair it may be construed in a number of ways...

"Just Like You" became Robbie's fifth and final top-40 pop hit in America in August of 1991. The single was a much bigger success Down Under, climbing to #4 in Australia (his only chart hit in that country). A second single from the album, "For Your Mind", attempted to tap in to the new jack swing fad going on at the time, but the single stalled down at #86. Since then, he's concentrated on songwriting, contributing to Disney vehicles like High School Musical, Hannah Montana,  and The Cheetah Girls and artist like American Idol fodder like Jordin Sparks and David Archuleta.

Up tomorrow: Southern rocker gets the band back together to find some wide open spaces.
