Robbed hit of the week 12/11/17 - Gloria Estefan's "Can't Forget You"...
"Can't Forget You" - Gloria Estefan
from the album Into The Light (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #43
This week's "robbed hit" comes from Gloria Estefan, whose triumphant return to the music world after a bus crash almost paralyzed her resulted in the inspirational #1 hit "Coming Out Of The Dark" in the spring of 1991. However the follow-up single, the uptempo rock attempt "Seal Our Fate", stalled on the American pop chart down at #53, despite being used in a Pepsi TV ad. In the British Isles, where "Seal Our Fate" reached the top-40, the third release would be the bright adult-pop of "Remember Me With Love", and did respectably at #22 in the UK. Meanwhile, in the US, Canada, Japan, and Australia, the third single would be the break-up love ballad "Can't Forget You". Written by Jon Secada, Jorge Casas, and Clay Ostwald, the theme of regretting a past relationship fail has been a frequent go-to for Gloria, who sells it so well...
While "Can't Forget You" was a big success on the "easy listening" format, spending three weeks at #2 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary radio chart, the single stopped a few notches short of the pop top-40 in August of 1991. The song was also a minor hit in Canada (#61) and Australia (#99).
