Songoftheday 11/1/15 - "Time flies when you're having fun" I heard somebody say, but if all I've been is fun then baby let me go don't wanna be in your way...

"Can't Stay Away From You" - Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine
from the album Let It Loose (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's song of the day is by the Cuban-American dance-pop band Miami Sound Machine with lead singer Gloria Estefan, whose second album after their English-language breakthrough, Let It Loose, had scored a top-5 pop hit with "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You". The follow-up, "Betcha Say That", did more modestly, topping out at #36 but still a respectable top-40 hit. Mimicking the releases from her last Primitive Love album, they put out the ballad "Can't Stay Away From You" (this set's "Words Get In The Way"). Written by Gloria and produced by her husband Emilio, the song brought out her voice in a way that the best of the Carpenters had done...

"Can't Stay Away From You" became the MSM's fifth top-40 pop hit in March of 1988, while going all the way to #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the song landed at #18 in Canada, and a year later was re-released and reached the top-10 in the UK and Ireland and topped the singles chart in the Netherlands.

Up tomorrow: a mash-up of a club classic brings the sample to the top-40, much louder now.
