Today's Song of the Day is by British rock musician Steve Winwood, whose long career from stints in the Spencer Davis Group to prog-rock faves Blind Faith and Traffic had led him to an solo adult contemporary pop path in the 80's, which culminated in his #1 hit single "Higher Love" in 1986. The second single from his Back In The High Life album, the "meatier" "Freedom Overspill", rode on a wave of horns and keyboard riffs that had a tinge of a Latin air about them, and had former Eagle Joe Walsh on guitar...

"Freedom Overspill" became the second hit from Back In The High Life, reaching the top-20 on the American pop chart in November of 1986. The record did much better on rock radio, climbing to #4 on that genre chart in Billboard magazine. In his native Britain, it was only a minor hit at #69.
