Disco Dessert 2/15/19 - "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" from Rod Stewart...

Image
" Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? " was a single from Scottish rock icon Rod Stewart , who dipped his toes into disco waters in the late 1970s. Appearing on his Blondes Have More Fun album, the track had two major uncredited samples on it, with jazz-rock artist Jorge Ben's " Taj Mahal " providing the melody for the chorus, while soul vet Bobby Womack's " (If You Want My Love) Put Something Down On It " gave the melody for the strings hook on the record. The song spent three weeks at #1 on the Disco/Dance Tracks chart in Billboard magazine, while also topping the pop chart in England and America. (Click below to see the rest of the post)

" Keep Ya Head Up " - 2Pac from the album Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z... (1993) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #12 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 14 Today's song of the day comes from the late rapper Tupac Shakur, aka 2Pac , who had landed his first top-40 pop hit in the fall of 1993 with " I Get Around ". As opposed to that party track, his follow-up single was much more topical. As shown in the music video, the song was dedicated to Latasha Harlins, a teenage African-American girl who was shot in the back of the head following an exchange at a liquor store by the store's owner's wife, who was eventually given a creampuff sentence even though convicted of ill intent. This incident, which was part of the sparks that set off the 1992 riots in Los Angeles (along with the beating of Rodney King), was alluded to at the start of this inspirational downtempo rap track, as 2Pac guides the listener to stay strong against all this adversity, especially for blac...

Disco Dessert 2/14/19 - "A Lover's Holiday" from Change...

Image
" A Lover's Holiday " was a club classic from the Italian/American disco act Change, who set the record for most weeks at #1 on Billboard magazine's Disco/Dance Tracks chart with the song. Appearing on their album The Glow Of Love , which Luther Vandross sang on as well, the song was written by Davide Romani and singer Tanyayette Willoughby. Charting with album cuts " The Glow Of Love " and " Searching ", the album as a whole spent nine weeks at the summit on the dance chart.

" Said I Loved You...But I Lied " - Michael Bolton from the album The One Thing (1993) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 20 Today's Valentine's song of the day belongs to singer Michael Bolton , who had just missed the pop top ten in America with a cover of the Bee Gees' " To Love Somebody " that spent five weeks atop the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") chart in Billboard magazine at the end of 1992. The following year, Bolton returned with his ninth studio album The One Thing . The lead single, "Said I Loved You...But I Lied" was a misleadingly-titled ballad written and produced by Michael with Robert "Mutt" Lange, who also helmed Bryan Adams' "Please Forgive Me", which also was hitting the charts at the same time. To be fair though, I really don't know what "this is more than love that I feel inside" means... "Said I Loved You...But I Lied...

" Wild World " - Mr. Big from the album Bump Ahead (1993) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 7 Today's song of the day comes from the hard rock band Mr. Big , who turned down their amplifiers and scored a pair of big pop hits in America with " Just Take My Heart " and the #1 single " To Be With You ". After touring by themselves and opening for Aerosmith, the band led by bassist Billy Sheehan returned with their third album Bump Ahead in the fall of 1993. The lead single was a cover of Cat Stevens' borderline-misogynistic break-up track "Wild World". The song had already been a hit in the last five years, as reggae artist Maxi Priest climbed to #25 in America and #5 in the UK. For their version, the band again went for a stripped-down approach focusing on Eric Martin's vocals and Paul Gilbert's acoustic guitar... Mr. Big's version of "Wild World" became their third and final ...
