" Can't Let Go " - Mariah Carey from the album Emotions (1991) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 17 Today's song of the day is by Mariah Carey , who had returned triumphant in the fall of 1991 with her fifth consecutive #1 pop hit (out of five tries) with " Emotions ". That song would be the title track of Mariah's sophomore effort, and the next single released from the set would be the dramatic break-up ballad "Can't Let Go". Written by Carey with producer Walter Afanasieff, the song would deftly showcase her range without going overboard with the vocal gymnastics. It would be a worthy successor to the second hit from her debut, "Love Takes Time" , also produced by Afanasieff... While "Can't Let Go" became Mariah's first American single to miss the top spot on the pop chart, it did climb to the runner-up position for a week in January of 1992. The single did spend three we...

" A Day In My Life (Without You) " - Lisette Melendez from the album Together Forever (1991) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #49 This week's "robbed hit" comes from Latin freestyle dance music singer Lisette Melendez , who had one of the biggest hits of the genre in the spring of 1991 with " Together Forever ". After a second single, " Stranger In My House Of Love ", stiffed, the third release and worthy follow-up from her debut album was released. "A Day In My Life (Without You)", which sounded quite similar to her breakthrough hit, was written by Lisette with producer Carlos Berrios along with Frank Reyes... While "A Day In My Life" spent 20 weeks on the American pop chart, the song peaked just above the halfway mark on the Hot 100 in November of 1991. It did turn out to be her highest-charting dance hit, reaching #30 on Billboard 's Club Play list. (Click below to see the rest of the post)

" Broken Arrow " - Rod Stewart from the album Vagabond Heart (1991) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 14 Today's song of the day comes from Rod Stewart , whose organic rock album Vagabond Heart had spun off two top ten pop hits in the U.S. with " Rhythm Of My Heart " and " The Motown Song ". Also he had a big international hit with Tina Turner with " It Takes Two " off the album that reached #5 in the UK. The third American single from the record, like these three, would also be a remake. "Broken Arrow" first appeared on the first solo album from the leader of "The Band", Robbie Robertson, who wrote the western-tinged rock song. That Robbie Robertson album reached #38 on the albums chart and was one of the top sellers of 1987-88, but the song wasn't released to radio until Rod remade it for Vagabond Heart . His version was produced by Patrick Leonard, who was more known for working ...

" Forever My Lady " - Jodeci from the album Forever My Lady (1991) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #25 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 12 Today's song of the day comes from the R&B group Jodeci , who came together in the late 1980s as  brothers Cedric ("K-Ci") and Joel ("JoJo") Hailey hooked up with brothers Dalvin ("Mr. Dalvin") and Donald ("Devante' Swing") DeGrate. Each pair was involved in gospel music in younger years, but as a group they pursued a much more secular path musically. Signed to Uptown Records with help from rapper Heavy D, who was signed to the label. At first, they sang backup for acts like Father MC, for whom they scored a top-20 R&B hit as a featured artist on his " Treat Them Like They Want To Be Treated " (#14 R&B) in 1990.  In 1991, naming themselves Jodeci to combine aspects of their names (JoJo+DeGrate+K-Ci), they released their debut album Forever My Lady in the spring of 1...

However, subsequent singles were having a harder time on mainstream radio, with follow-up " Seal Our Fate " peaking down at #53, and third release " Can't Forget You " almost reaching the top-40 at #43 that August. Also, track " Remember Me With Love " reached the top 40 in the UK and Ireland both at #22, while "Nayib's Song (I Am Here For You)" was a minor hit in the Netherlands at #70.
