Songoftheday 09/19/24 - Well I'm a hustler and a player and you know I'm not a stayer...

"I'm Still In Love With You" - Sean Paul featuring Sasha
from the album Dutty Rock (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 16

Today's song comes from the dancehall-reggae artist Sean Paul, whose second album Dutty Rock catapulted him into the American mainstream pop world, already scoring a trio of hits with "Gimme The Light", "Like Glue", and the #1 smash "Get Busy". He also went to #1 as a featured artist on Beyonce's "Baby Boy" in the fall of 2003, giving Sean even more name recognition and exposure. Right when the latter was topping the charts, Sean released the fourth single from his album, "I'm Still In Love With You", which featured dancehall singer Christine Chin, who recorded then under the name Sasha. Sasha, also signed to the reggae stalwart VP label, had a minor R&B hit in the summer of 2003 with "Dat Sexy Body", which peaked at #79. Written by Sean and producers Wycliffe "Steely" Johnson and Cleveland "Clevie" Brown along with Anton Ellis, the song's lyrics have Sean and Sasha trading lines with Sean laying clear that he's a philandering loverboy, while Sasha cooes how she still craves him. The production from Steely and Clevie is what really shines, as his most traditional reggae offering is punctuated by farty horns and a multi-tracked Sasha's harmonies. The music video is a party affair, with Sean and Sasha overseeing a bevy of sex-hungry dancers, and in return he continued his winning streak...

"I'm Still In Love With You" became Sean Paul's fourth top-40 hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100  (and Sasha's first and only) in April of 2003, while reaching #13 on their R&B Singles list and #8 on the Rap Songs chart. On the radio, the song climbed to #17 on the Mainstream Top-40 chart, #20 on the Mainstream R&B list, and #11 at the dance/R&B-oriented Rhythmic format. Internationally, the single topped the Polish airplay chart, and reached the top-40 in the United Kingdom (#6), Italy (#6), Ireland (#7), Switzerland (#10), Austria (#11), Denmark (#11), Finland (#12), Canada (#15 Sales/#20 Airplay), Germany (#19), Australia (#20), France (#31), Belgium (#34 Wallonia/#42 Flanders), the Netherlands (#35), and Sweden (#38).

Sasha would continue to release reggae singles before transitioning to becoming a gospel artist.

Sean will be back to the series.
