Songoftheday 4/5/24 - Well I don't really care what people say, I don't really watch what dem wan do...

"Like Glue" - Sean Paul
from the album Dutty Rock (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #13 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's song comes from Jamaican dancehall artist Sean Paul, whose album Dutty Rock had already spun off two crossover hits on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 with "Gimme The Light" and "Get Busy", with the latter topping the chart in the spring of 2003. For the third single from the record Sean released "Like Glue", which he wrote with producer Tony Kelly and sampling the 2001 song "Money 2 Burn" from the reggae band T.O.K.. The lyrics have him spitting out a machine gun-pace patois on hitting up on his women (yes, plural), and how he's devoted to them (well, at the time). The production is stop-start frenetic energy but at a mid-level pace, with the Indian influence on the "riddim" sound used to good effect. The result continued the artist's winning streak, while the music video continued the house party that "Get Busy" started...

"Like Glue" became Sean Paul's third single to reach the Hot 100's top-40 in August of 2003, while reaching #9 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart. On the radio, the song went to #29 on the Mainstream Top-40 chart, #11 on the Mainstream R&B airplay list, #10 on the dance/R&B-oriented Rhythmic format, and #15 on the Dance Airplay chart. Internationally, the single went to #1 in Hungary, and reached the top ten in the United Kingdom (#3), Ireland (#4), Switzerland (#6), Canada (#6 Sales), and Italy (#9). It also made the top-40 in Sweden (#13), the Netherlands (#17), Austria (#17), Finland (#17), New Zealand (#18), Germany (#20), Australia (#20), Denmark (#20), Czechia (#20), Belgium (#21 Flanders/#25 Wallonia), and France (#31).

Both Sean Paul and the Dutty Rock album will be back to the series.
