Songoftheday 5/7/24 - Girl you've never known no one like me up there in your high society, they might tell you I'm no good girl they need to understand just who I am...

"Real Good Man" - Tim McGraw
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's song comes from Tim McGraw whose seventh studio album Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors (name-checking his backing band) had already spun off a pair of crossover hits on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 with "Red Rag Top" and "She's My Kind Of Rain".  The third radio single from the record was the midtempo track "Real Good Man". Written by industry pros Rivers Rutherford and George Teren, the song is a lighthearted plea to a lover that despite his "bad boy" persona he's a stand up guy. The production is a professionally-performed but kind of basic blues-rock distillation, with Tim's seemingly sarcastic jokiness on the lyrics seems to soften the hyper-masculine message. It's not offensive, but he's done this before and better. The music video brings a more punched-up live performance that is a better fit for the song...

Nevertheless, "Real Good Man" brought Tim back to the top of Billboard's Country Songs airplay chart for two weeks, and carried over to the top-40 on the all-genre Hot 100 in October of 2003.

Both Tim and the Dancehall Doctors album will be back to the series.
