Songoftheday 5/6/24 - On that sunny day didn't know I'd meet, such a beautiful girl walkin' down the street...

"Senorita" - Justin Timberlake
from the album Justified (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song comes from Justin Timberlake, whose first album after *NSYNC, Justified, had already spun off three hit singles with "Like I Love You", "Cry Me A River", and "Rock Your Body".  He also sang backup on the Black Eyed Peas' breakout single "Where Is The Love" (albeit uncredited on the label). The fourth release from the record was its opening track "Senorita". Written by Justin with the production team of the Neptunes - Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo - the lyrics have Timberlake doing the flirtatious dance with a prospective female. The Neptunes paint the record with a loose jazzy backing that works better than trying to put on a Latin pastiche. The organ and percussion drive Justin's smoother-than-usual flow, and while it's not lyrically obtuse, it's a pretty decent mood record that isn't as dated as "Like I Love You" has gotten. The music video puts Timberlake and the Neptunes in an out of the way "dive", albeit the forced singalong is a bit cringe and sets it back a notch...

"Senorita" became the fourth top-40 hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in September of 2003. On the radio, the song peaked up at #5 on the Mainstream Top-40 chart, #17 on the Dance Airplay list, and #29 on the dance/R&B-oriented Rhythmic format. Internationally, the single placed in the top ten in New Zealand (#4), Croatia (#5), and Australia (#6), while making the top-40 in the United Kingdom (#13),  Denmark (#13), Ireland (#15), Belgium (#15 Flanders), Romania (#17), Greece (#17), Canada (#19 Sales), the Netherlands (#26), Sweden (#29), and Italy (#37), and came one notch away in France at #41.

Justin will be back to the series.
