Songoftheday 10/13/23 - Here you come knockin' on my door, baby tell me what you got on your mind...

"Who's Your Daddy?" - Toby Keith
from the album Unleashed (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #22 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9

Today's song comes from Toby Keith, who rode the 9/11 train to jingoistic and banal town with "Courtesy Of The Red, White, & Blue (The Angry American)", which topped Billboard magazine's Country Songs chart and made the top quarter of the Hot 100.  Thankfully, the follow-up didn't go down that path, and was a song Toby had been working on awhile. It's odd that it'd be a song about a "sugar daddy" that'd be "refreshing", but here was are. Keith is always at his best when he's either brokenhearted or a comic, and this plays the latter to a shuffling beat and "Who's Your Daddy?", which he wrote. But when the first verse reveals she came to him because "all the college boys left", it gives me pause bringing the age factor into play who the then 41-year-old. The production is rollicking country-rock, and his delivery does play up the humor to best effect. The music video plays it all to the tilt for a Trumpian wet dream. It gives a "twist" ending, but the "twist" isn't much better in the cradle-robbing department...

"Who's Your Daddy?" reached the top-40 on Billboard's Hot 100 in December of 2002, while taking a week at the top of their Country Songs airplay chart.

Toby and the album will be back to the series.
