Songoftheday 10/10/23 - We got the afternoon you got this room for two, one thing I've left to do discover me discovering you...

from the album Room For Squares (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #18 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 25

Today's song comes from singer/songwriter John Mayer, whose debut single "No Such Thing" had landed him a top 20 hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in the summer of 2002.  His follow-up would be the slacker romanticism of "Your Body Is A Wonderland". Written by Mayer and produced by John Alagia, the lyrics put John in a conversation tone as he woos his (assumed) girlfriend into the bedroom. With lines like "I'll never let your head hit the bed without my hand behind it" the swarminess is on full display, but let's face it, many of us fall for this time and time again, and Mayer's soft and soothing delivery helps the (ahem) medicine go down. The production is smooth but allows John to let his jazzier side out in the instrumental bridge which is the best part of the record. The music video vacillates between shots of Mayer and a girlfriend in a loft and John on tour...

"Your Body Is A Wonderland" became Mayer's second to make the top-20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January of 2003. On the radio, the song peaked at #15 on the Mainstream Top-40 airplay chart, and #17 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening" list), while spending 48 weeks on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, with seven of those at #3. But its biggest success was on the new Adult Album Alternative (or "Triple-A") Rock format, landing his second #1 after "No Such Thing". Internationally, the single went to #9 in New Zealand and #23 in Australia. At the 2003 Grammy Awards, where he lost the New Artist trophy to Norah Jones, "Your Body Is A Wonderland" took the award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

A third and final single from Room For Squares, "Why Georgia", rose all the way to #8 on the Adult Top-40 chart, and #2 on the Triple-A Rock format, but only "bubbled under" the Hot 100 at #102 (people were snapping up the album more than the single).

John will be back to the series.
