Robbed hit of the week 7/3/23 - Ruff Endz' "Someone To Love You"...

"Someone To Love You" - Ruff Endz
from the album Someone To Love You (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #49 (two weeks)

This week's "robbed hit" comes from the R&B duo Ruff Endz, who scored a huge top ten crossover hit in the autumn of 2000 with their debut single "No More". Despite the lack of a successful follow-up, Epic Records gave David Chance and Dante Jordan a second chance with a second album Someone To Love You. The lead single from the record was the party track "Cash, Money, Cars, Clothes", featuring rapper Memphis Bleek, which served more as a "hype" single than proper radio hit. The song nevertheless climbed to #69 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart.

For the second try, the pair released the album's title track "Someone To Love You". Written by producer Cory Rooney with Troy Oliver (the two of them also had a hand in writing Jennifer Lopez's #1 hit "I'm Real"), the song has the duo trying to reassure a new love that they're in it for the long haul. It uses all the usual love song tropes, but both Chance and Jordan put over stellar vocal performances, and the production is 80's style lush without seeming dated. The music video is super-cute as well, a refreshing take on the usual fare in the genre....

While "Someone To Love You" climbed to #12 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart, spending a hefty 43 weeks on the list, it stopped right above the halfway mark on the Billboard Hot 100 "pop" chart in June of 2002. But the song was a huge success on the older-skewing Adult R&B radio format,  topping that airplay chart for twelve weeks. The Someone To Love You album, released in May of that year, did make it to #27 on the Billboard 200 sales tally (their best rank), and #8 on the R&B Albums list.

A third single from the set, "Will You Be Mine", was a minor hit on the Adult R&B chart at #36. Finally let go from Epic, Chance and Jordan split for awhile, before reuniting in 2010 for the self-released album The Final Chapter. Since then they've released two more albums independently, the most recent being Rebirth in 2021.
