Songoftheday 6/22/23 - Well I love her but I love to fish, I spend all day out on this lake and hell is all I catch...
"I'm Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin' Song)" - Brad Paisley
from the album Part II (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #29 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7
Today's song comes from Brad Paisley, whose appropriately-titled sophomore album Part II had brought him back to the crossover Hot 100 top-40 in the beginning of 2002 with the lightly comical but romantic song "Wrapped Around". The third single from the record was an even more jocular tune with "I'm Gonna Miss Her". Written by Brad with producer Frank Rogers, the neo-traditional country song starts off with Brad's woman giving him an ultimatum - to either hang with her or go fishing again. Of course, as the title of the piece goes, you already know his answer, but Paisley is so damn cute about it that you can't even get mad. The music video follows the plot as it should, and features cameos from ESPN broadcaster Dan Patrick, Jerry Springer, and his future wife Kimberly Williams. And with his lighthearted look at love, Brad found himself back on top of the country radio chart for the third time...
"I'm Gonna Miss Her" became Paisley's fourth single to reach the top-40 on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in July of 2002. The song spent two weeks at #1 on their Country Airplay Songs chart as well. At the Grammy Awards in 2003, Brad was nominated for Best Male Country Vocal Performance, losing out to "Give My Love To Rose" from Johnny Cash.
A fourth and final single from Part II was the tear-inducing ballad "I Wish You'd Stay", written by Paisley with Chris Dubois. The song landed another top ten country radio hit at #7, while peaking at #57 on the Hot 100. Another track from the album, "Munster Rag" (Brad would include at least one big instrumental number on all his albums), was nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental the year before, which went to a truckload of veterans on the Earl Scruggs & Friends album. (Paisley may have split his vote since he was also up for "Sugarfoot Rag" with the Resocasters.)
Brad will be back to the series.
