Songoftheday 5/4/23 - No I don't got fancy cars or diamond rings, Lord knows I will if I make it with this singing thing...

"Anything" - Jaheim featuring Next
from the album Ghetto Love (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #28 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9

Today's song comes from R&B singer Jaheim, who scored a crossover top-40 pop hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 with his debut single "Could It Be" in the spring of 2001.  His follow-up, "Just In Case", got as high as #15 on the R&B Singles chart, but stalled down at #52 on the Hot 100. For the third release from his debut album Ghetto Love, they went with a swaying R&B track that was more like the music from the featured backup singers, the group Next, who had a top-10 pop hit in the fall of 2000 with "Wifey". By the time of the release of this as a single, Next's R.L. had already left for a solo career, but the group collectively backs up the rather basic "I'll give you what you need" track. The backup string touches and synth flourishes are the only memorable things from the record, though Jaheim's vocals are pleasant enough....

"Anything" became Jaheim's second top-40 hit on the Hot 100, and Next's fifth, in April of 2002, while climbing to #6 on their R&B Singles chart.

While this was Next's last time on the Hot 100, Jaheim will be back to the series.
