Songoftheday 5/16/23 - I got your legs spread all over the bed, hands clenched in the sheets...

from the album Ecstasy (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9

Today's song comes from R&B singer/songwriter (Myron) Avant, whose debut album My Thoughts in 2000 had spun off two top-40 crossover hits on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 with "Separated" and "My First Love" featuring Keke Wyatt. Avant reunited with Wyatt for a single from her album Soul Sista, "Nothing In This World", which also made the pop top-40 in the spring of 2002. At the same time, Avant returned with his own sophomore album Ecstasy. The lead single from the record was the bedroom soul of "Makin' Good Love". Written by the singer with producer Steve "Stone" Huff, the song doesn't cover much lyrical ground other than moving the setting and the position they are getting their freak on. But this was at the height of R. Kelly's reign, and this fit the bill to emulate him, so fans and radio came on board, returning the singer to the charts...

"Makin' Good Love" became Avant's fourth top-40 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 in May of 2002, while making it to #7 on their R&B Singles chart. On the radio, the song hit #26 on the older-skewing Adult R&B radio chart, along with its placing at #7 on the R&B Airplay list. The Ecstasy album, released in March of that year, landed at #6 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and #2 on the R&B Albums list, going on to sell over a half million copies.

After a second single from Ecstasy, "You Ain't Right", stiffed, a third release, "Don't Say No, Just Say Yes" (another bedroom ballad), did better, peaking at #96 on the Hot 100 and #51 on the R&B Singles chart.

Avant will be back to the series.
