Songoftheday 7/6/17 - It's quarter to two and I've still got you on my mind, I'm just a prisoner trapped in the chains of your love....
"My Love Is A Fire" - Donny Osmond
from the album Eyes Don't Lie (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9
Today's song of the day comes from former teen idol Donny Osmond, who left his child-star past behind in the late 1980's with a transformation into a George Michael-lite pop singer with his comeback hit "Soldier Of Love" and follow-up "Sacred Emotion". He re-enlisted the same writing production team of Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers for the first single from his next album, Eyes Don't Lie. "My Love Is A Fire" was a slice of late-80's dance-pop that was still clinging for dear life at the turn of the decade for space on mainstream radio...
"My Love Is A Fire" became Donny's so-far most recent top-40 pop hit in the U.S. in December of 1990. The single also was a minor hit in the UK at #64. His second single from the album, "Sure Lookin'", sounded even more like something from Faith, but stalled down at #54 on the Hot 100. A third offering, the ballad "Love Will Survive", was a moderate hit on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio format at #24.
Osmond's career since was more concentrated on the stage, where he was most noted in his role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and in concert singing his past hits for an now-older crowd. Like his contemporary David Cassidy, Donny was still big in Britain, scoring four top-40 albums there, and having a top ten single in the UK with "Breeze On By", co-written by Take That's Gary Barlow, in 2004 (it also slipped on to the American adult contemporary radio chart at #37). He also enjoyed a long-running residency at Las Vegas' Flamingo Hotel with sister Marie. His most recent album, The Soundtrack Of My Life, came out in 2014 and reached the top-20 in England and #177 in the US. He also appeared on Dancing With The Stars in 2009, eventually winning that ninth season.
