Songoftheday 3/7/17 - Girl I must warn you I sense something strange in my mind, situation is serious let's cure it 'cause we're running out of time...
"Poison" - Bell Biv Devoe
from the album Poison (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (four weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 17
Today's song of the day comes the R&B/hip-hop trio Bell Biv Devoe, which was a side project for New Edition members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivens, and Ronnie Devoe. After the Heart Break album, which scored the Edition their second top ten pop hit with "If It Isn't Love", the then-quintet took a break, with Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant heading on the solo route for awhile. BBD released their album first, and the lead single and title track from the set, "Poison", set them far from their smooth harmonies with NE and not jumping on the new jack swing bandwagon but rather dominating it. Written by produced by Dr. Freeze (aka Elliot Straite), the bass-heavy track flowed effortlessly from the sung verses and chorus flanking the rap bridge, all about a lady they are warning you clearly about...
"Poison" became Bell Biv Devoe's first top-10 pop hit in June of 1990. The single spent two weeks at #1 on Billboard's R&B chart (to be replaced by Johnny Gill's "Rub You The Right Way"). The remixes of the song climbed to #7 on their Dance Club Play chart, a triumph for urban/hip-hop music at the disco. Internationally, the song reached the top ten in New Zealand (#3), Australia (#6), and the Netherlands (#5), and peaked at #19 in the UK.

Here's the dance remix that sent the song to #7 on the dance chart...
...the trio appeared live on Showtime At the Apollo to promote the single and made the women scream...
...and again on Arsenio...
...and lastly, from last October on Wendy Williams after a piece of their new single "Run"...
Up tomorrow: Some Bette, but no Joan for this fashion plate.
