Songoftheday 3/21/17 - The crime wave is high with mugging mysterious, All police and detectives are furious...
"Turtle Power" - Partners In Kryme
from the album Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Original Soundtrack) (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #13 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song of the day was the theme to the first incarnation of the movie adaptation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, which came out in 1990, and ended up making huge bank in the top 10 films of that year. With no major stars and an independent production, the movie ended up reaping over 200 million at the box office. For the big song from the movie, "Turtle Power", two New Yorkers, rapper Richard Usher and DJ James Alpern came together as Partners In Kryme for the single they wrote and produced themselves...
"Turtle Power" climbed all the way into the pop top 20 in June of 1990. The single also made it to #23 on Billboard's R&B chart as well. But as well as it did here (and the album also reached the top-20 on the charts in America), the novelty number was a major smash overseas, with the record spending a whole month time at #1 in the UK. It also hit the top 10 in Ireland (#4) and New Zealand (#7), and peaked in the top-20 in Germany (#12), Switzerland (#14), and Australia (#15). The pair followed up with another single, "Undercover", which slipped on to the British chart for a week at #92. They continue to record together, and probably don't deserve the one-hit-wonder status they ended up with from the "Turtle Power" success.
