Songoftheday 10/3/16 - I knew it from the start you would break my heart, but still I had to play this painful part...
"Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" - Milli Vanilli
from the album Girl You Know It's True (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14
Today's song of the day is from Milli Vanilli, the pop act from Germany that was presenting as the charismatic duo of Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, but in fact were studio singers hired by producer Frank Farian with the pair simply lip-synching for their lives in the videos and public appearances. But in the summer of 1989, this wasn't revealed as yet, with the group scoring a #2 hit with "Girl You Know It's True", then going all the way to #1 with "Baby, Don't Forget My Number". The third single from their debut album was the break-up ballad "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You". Written by Farian with Peter Bishof-Fallenstein and Dietmar Kawohl, the lite-R&B with some cooed rap interlude further enhanced girls' attraction to the two guys they though were the Vanilli...
"Girl, I'm Gonna Miss You" became Milli Vanilli's second #1 pop hit in the U.S. in September of 1989. The song also crossed over to #20 on Billboard's R&B chart, while slipping in at #21 on their Adult Contemporary radio list (their first time at this format). Internationally, the record topped the charts in Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands, got to the runner-up spot in Germany, Sweden, Ireland, and the UK, and peaked at #3 in France and Australia.
