Songoftheday 7/1/16 - You see I pulled into a drive-in and I found a place to park, we hopped into the backseat where it's always nice and dark...
"Your Mama Don't Dance" - Poison
from the album Open Up And Say...Ahhhh!!! (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10
Today's song of the day comes from the glam-metal band Poison, whose second album Open Up And Say...Ahhhh!!! had landed them a trio of big hits with "Nothin' But A Good Time", "Fallen Angel", and the #1 pop hit "Every Rose Has It's Thorn". The fourth release from the set was a cover of a song that made the charts back in 1972 (sixteen years prior). "Your Mama Don't Dance" was a rollicking anti-establishment song done by rock/pop singer/songwriters (Kenny) Loggins and (Jim) Messina, and went to #4 on the American pop chart...
Poison sped up the tempo double-fold for their rollicking take on the track. The official video was the live version...
The band's cover of "Your Mama Don't Dance" became their fourth top-10 pop hit (and third from the album) in April of 1989. The track also slipped in to Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart at #39. Internationally, the single tied for their biggest hit in the UK at #13 with "Every Rose...", climbed to #3 in New Zealand, and reached the top-40 in Canada (#17) and Australia (#21).

Poison's cover wasn't the first by a big metal group - Y&T included the song on their top-100 album Down For The Count in 1985, and you can tell Poison's ears had perked up on this...
...and here's the studio version of the song...
...and harkening back to L&M on their MTV Unplugged appearance in 1990...
...lastly, here's Poison live again in 2007...
Up tomorrow: A soul icon is having communication breakdown.
