Songoftheday 5/17/18 - I wish I had all you ever wanted, I'd give it right to you but I don't have it, how could I ever find it?

"You Won't See Me Cry" - Wilson Phillips
from the album Shadows and Light (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20 (one week)
Weeks i the Top-40: 8

Today's song of the day comes from the female vocal trio Wilson Phillips, two daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson along with  Chynna Phillips, the spawn of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. Their self-titled debut album made them one of the top music acts of the first years of the 1990s, spinning off five top-40 pop hits with "The Dream Is Still Alive", "Impulsive", and three #1 smashes in "Hold On", "Release Me", and "You're In Love". All told, those songs spent a total of 71 weeks in the top-40. They were nominated for five Grammy awards, including Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Song of the Year (for "Hold On"), and back to back Pop Vocal Duo/Group nods for "Hold On" and "You're In Love" in 1990 and 1991. In 1991, they contributed a cover of Elton John's "Daniel" to his tribute album Two Rooms, and went to #7 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary radio chart, and #26 in Canada. With all that success, of course the pressure was on to come up with a worthy successor, and in 1992, the group returned with their sophomore effort Shadows and Light. An ambitiously artistic growth from their sunny California debut, which was a lot of zen and relationship teachings, this set was more the therapist's office California, as evidenced in the first single, the beautiful "You Won't See Me Cry". Written by the women with producer Glen Ballard, who also helmed their debut, the song was full of expressive statements, tight harmonies, and key changes from heaven...

"You Won't See Me Cry" became the trio's sixth top-40 pop hit in June of 1992, though underperforming all five of their hits from their debut. The song did much better on "easy listening" radio, climbing to #4 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary format chart. Internationally, the single spent a week at #1 in Canada, and reached the top-40 in Switzerland (#11), the UK (#18), Ireland (#30), Australia (#31), and Germany (#36).

Here's the sisters performing "You Won't See Me Cry on Arsenio Hall (sorry for the bad quality, it was the best I found, and I think its worth hearing their tight harmonies in this type of live setting)...

and finally, live in concert in 2014...

Up tomorrow: R&B group is sparking some conversation.
