Songoftheday 11/9/15 - I used to walk home all alone it used to be so sad...

"Because Of You" - The Cover Girls
from the album Show Me (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's song of the day comes from the 'freestyle dance music' trio the Cover Girls, who came together under the mentorship of producer Andy Tripoli in the mid-80s with Angel Clivilles, Caroline Jackson, and Sunshine Wright. Their first single, "Show Me", became a club and dance radio classic, spending 18 weeks on the pop charts and just missing the American top-40 at #44 in 1987. The follow-up single, "Spring Love", popped on to the Hot 100 for a week at #98, even though it sported a more mainstream "Miami Sound Machine" vibe. After Wright left the group to be replaced by Margo Urban, the Cover Girls released their third single, "Because Of You". Written by David Cole (eventually one of the "C"s of the C+C Music Factory), it took them back to their wheelhouse, with the frenetic tempo and dramatic lyrics about being lost until they were 'saved' by their current lover...

"Because Of You" became the Cover Girls' first top-40 pop hit in America in February of 1988. The single also crossed over to #47 on Billboard's R&B chart, while the 12" single climbed to #16 on their Dance Club Play chart.

And here's the girls performing "Because of You" live (yes, really live) on Top Of The Pops in 1988...
