Songoftheday 11/13/15 - I sink like a stone that's been thrown in the ocean, my logic has drowned in a sea of emotion...

"Be Still My Beating Heart" - Sting
from the album ...Nothing Like The Sun (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's song of the day comes from Sting, whose second solo album after the breakup of the Police had already scored him a top-10 pop hit in America with "We'll Be Together". The second single from the project "Be Still My Beating Heart", was a jazzy slice of sophisti-pop that featured his ex-bandmate Andy Summers on guitar, but with his own bass playing distinctly on display. His vocal phrasing on the lyrics reminds me quite a bit like Sade...

"Be Still..." became the second hit from ...nothing like the sun, reaching the pop top-20 in March of 1988. Rock stations took to the free-form composition better, with the song climbing to #2 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart, while it also crossed over to #37 on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") list.
