Robbed hit of the week 11/9/15 - Eurythmics' "I Need A Man"...

"I Need A Man" - Eurythmics
from the album Savage (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #46

This week's "robbed hit" comes from the British new wave duo Eurythmics, who had dominated the 80s so far with four big albums (after their stiffed debut In The Garden). They had scored their ninth top-40 pop hit in America in 1986 with "Missionary Man", which ventured even farther into modern rock territory. The following year Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart released their sixth studio album, Savage. A loose tapestry of a 'concept'-like album, it was accompanied by a set of music videos for each track directed by Sophie Muller, about a housewife with lots of secrets mulling about in her head. While the avant-garde track "Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)" was the first single in their native UK, followed by the single "Shame" (which ironically just missed the top-40 by a notch there), it wasn't until release #3 from the album that America got our first single from Savage. "I Need A Man" was a tornado of female-powered rock fury from Annie's first yell, and the guitars have that immediate hook that marked the best Rolling Stones records. Her punk-inspired delivery and sarcastic wit won me over, the cornerstone of my absolute favorite record from the pair...

While "I Need A Man" continued their success in Britain, reaching #26, and climbed into the top-40 on Billboard's Rock chart and even made the top-10 on their club list, the single stopped short of the pop top-40 in January of 1988.

Baby, you're just overblown.
