Songoftheday 8/7/24 - We came together, fell apart and broke each other's hearts...

"Remember When" - Alan Jackson
from the album Greatest Hits Volume II (2003)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #29 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's song comes from neo-traditional country music artist Alan Jackson, whose second Greatest Hits collection had already scored a huge hit with "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" with Jimmy Buffett, which topped the Country Songs airplay chart for two months and crossed over to the top-40 on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in the autumn of 2003.  The second of the two new songs on the compilation, "Remember When", was released as the follow-up. Written by Jackson, the song lyrics are simple yet poignant, with each verse capturing a snapshot in time, with Jackson and his (supposed wife) taking each others' virginity, getting married, had their share of troubles, and brought their love to their children. The line "We came together, fell apart and broke each other's hearts" is so real (and in his case, realistic) and cuts closer than the bevy of branding in the genre at the time. The production from Keith Stegall is sparse and sweet without being maudlin, and as a result Jackson gives one of his best performances on a single in his career...

"Remember When" reached the top-40 on Billboard's Hot 100 in February of 2004, while topping the Country Songs airplay chart for two weeks.

Jackson will be back to the series.
