"Splash Waterfalls" - Ludacris
from the album Chicken-n-Beer (2003)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 16

Today's song comes from Atlanta-based rapper Ludacris, who had topped both the Hot 100 and the R&B Singles charts in Billboard magazine at the close of 2003 with the "Stand Up" featuring Shawnna. His next success off the album was "Splash Waterfalls", written by the artist with producer Mike "Icedrake" Guy and sampling the song "Wind Parade" by jazz legend Donald Byrd giving writer Larry Mizell credit, and featured backup vocals from Sandy Coffee that weren't credited on the listing. Luda puts on his loverboy hat, vacillating between romantic and carnal exclamations of desire for his woman. He goes from "together holding hands...making family plans" to "don't want no strings attached just scratches on your back" in consecutive lines. The production is slinky and seductive and mindful of older soul records, but the record in the end is a bit static. The music video, which does include Coffee, morphs into the remix version which samples Tony Toni Tone's "Whatever You Want" and lead singer Rafael Saadiq makes an appearance. But the emphasis is on the bevy of ladies wanting relations with Chris...(By the way the title doesn't appear in the lyrics but is generously CGI'd in for the video)

"Splash Waterfalls" became the second top ten hit from Chicken-n-Beer on the Hot 100 in March of 2004, while spending a week at #2 on their R&B Singles chart and peaking at #3 on the Rap Singles list. On the radio, the song missed the Mainstream Top-40 chart (too R&B-centric for pop stations), but got to #2 on the Mainstream R&B list and #5 on the dance/R&B-oriented Rhythmic format.

The diss track "Blow It Out" (originally appended to "Yo Ass"), which address then Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, was originally put out in September of 2003, but eventually made it on to the R&B Singles chart at #56 in May of 2004. At the same time, the fifth single from the set, "Diamond In The Back", popped on to the Hot 100 at #94 while hitting the halfway mark on the R&B Singles list at #51.

Ludacris will be back to the series.

Up tomorrow: A midwestern rapper had a hit 20 years ago with a song sampled by this week's current #1 hit.
