Twostepcub's Year End Music Chart for 2023...

Image
Happy New Years Eve, folks, it's time to finally wrap up the some good, a lot of bad year in music with my year-end chart of the biggest songs on my weekly list for 2023. I tabulated each song for their weekly stats on my 100-position chart , with 1 point for #100 and 100 points for #1, with extra points for multiple weeks at the top. Still, five of the top ten never made it to the summit, but lingered on forever (tops is 46 weeks for "Calm Down"). I'm sorry I didn't have the chance to roll it out over time but the holidays got to me, and I at least want to bring some closure to this year. I'll Spotify playlist the list as usual at the bottom. Thanks for being here!   Rank                Song/Artist (Peak and Weeks on Chart in parentheses) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Flowers - Miley Cyrus (#1 - seven weeks, 45 weeks on chart) 2. Fast Car - Luke Combs (#1 - twelve w

" Man To Man " - Gary Allan from the album Alright Guy (2001) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #25 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 6   Today's song comes from country music artist Gary Allan , who after five years of having success in Nashville finally cracked Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in the summer of 2002 with " The One ".  Gary's follow-up would be another mid-tempo track, "Man To Man". Written by Jamie O'Hara (of the country duo the O'Kanes), the song's lyrics put Gary in the place of a guy confronted by his girlfriend's ex, who accuses Allen of stealing her away. Allan nips that in the bud, explaining that he wouldn't have her if the ex had treated her right. He even tries to empathize with the guy, but in the end says "she's a real woman, not a doormat for you". It's a perspective that doesn't usually get told in country music, but still is so real and adult and nuanced. The production from Tony

" You Can't Hide Beautiful " - Aaron Lines from the album Living Out Loud (2003) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #38 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 3   Today's song comes from Canadian country singer Aaron Lines, who grew up in the northern part of the province of Alberta. He released his debut album Love Changes Everything on an indie label, where it got critical and airplay success in his homeland. With that momentum Aaron went to the States and was signed by RCA Nashville, who retooled the Canadian album for American release as Living Out Loud . Lines' first single in the U.S. was "You Can't Hide Beautiful", written by Michael Dulaney and Jason Sellers (who had a couple of top-40 country hits of his own). The lyrics have Aaron giving a pep talk to his partner, who is having issues with their appearance. It's the theme Meghan Trainor would build a pop career on over a decade later. It could have gone extra cheesy, but Sellers is a good writer,

" Sick Of Being Lonely " - Field Mob from the album From The Roota To The Toota (2002) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #18 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 9   Today's song comes from the rap duo Field Mob, who were friends from childhood in the southern Georgia city of Albany. At the close of the 1990's, Shawn Johnson and Darion Crawford , who dubbed themselves Shawn J and Smoke, were signed to the local indie label Southern House, where they released their debut single " Project Dreamz ". After the song clipped Billboard magazine's R&B chart at #91, and got a lot of attention regionally, Field Mob was bought out by MCA Records, who released their debut album 613: From Ashy To Classy (you'll see a pattern of great albums titles from the guys. The record went to #194 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and #35 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.   With momentum from the good critical and commercial reaction to their debut, the duo released their

" I Wish You'd Stay " - Brad Paisley from the album Part II (2001) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #57   This week's "robbed hit" comes from country music artist Brad Paisley , whose appropriately titled sophomore effort Part II had spun off a pair of hits that crossed over to Billboard magazine's Hot 100 top-40 with " Wrapped Around " and " I'm Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin' Song) ", both playing up to his comic charm. For the fourth and final single from the record (lead single "Too People Fell In Love" missed the pop top-40), Paisley went more serious with the breakup ballad "I Wish You'd Stay". Written by Brad with Chris DuBois (who also helped on "Wrapped Around"), the lyrics have him seeing a former partner off, trying to be the "golden retreiver guy" who makes sure she has all the things and warnings needed for the trip. But when the chorus whooshes in, he bids farewell but not wi

It also popped on to Billboard 's dance/R&B-oriented Rhythmic radio chart at #40.   It would be their follow-up single that would give the pair their biggest success. "Tell Me (What's Goin' On)" was written by Smilez and Southstar along with producer Jonathan "Dakari" St. Aimee, using a sample of the song "Stop, Look, Listen To Your Heart" from Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye, giving writers Linda Creed and Thom Bell credit on the track.
