"Superman" - Eminem
from the album The Eminem Show (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's song comes from Eminem, whose third album The Eminem Show had already scored a pair of top ten hits with "Without Me" and "Cleaning Out My Closet".  He then released his semi-autobiographical movie 8 Mile, which became a huge success, as did the centerpiece song from the soundtrack, "Lose Yourself", which topped Billboard's Hot 100 for three months and won him an Oscar and a pair of Grammy Awards. The rapper then went back to his studio album to release his next single "Superman". Written by Eminem (under his real name Marshall Marhers) along with producer/engineers Jeff Bass and Steve King, the record is back in his vindictive towards those that wrong him vein, with an especially misogynistic slant this time. It's one thing to not be able to solve another's problems, but here he isn't just unsupportive but brags how he has to cast aside any woman with the slightest bit of baggage. He even inserted a snark for the woman who was claimed to originally have recorded the female chorus part, Mariah Carey, which studio singer Dina Rae took over on. The verses go on and on with his getting his pent-up aggression out, which may be good for him, but its a hard slog to those who aren't rabid fans. But there were enough, and with the momentum from "Lose Yourself" in high swing, this wasn't going to be allowed to flop. The production is as one-note as his delivery, and the music video was a narcissistic excuse to film himself with a rando pornstar...

"Superman" became the third top-40 hit on Billboards Hot 100 from The Eminem Show in March of 2003, while peaking at #44 on their R&B Singles chart and #10 on the Rap Singles list. On the radio, the song went to #10 on the Mainstream Top-40 airplay chart, #35 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay list, and #5 on the dance/R&B-oriented Rhythmic format. Internationally, the single rose to #19 on the Canadian radio chart, and just missed the top-40 in New Zealand at #42.

Eminem and the album will be back to the series.
