Twostepcubchart's Best of 2016: Part Seven: #40 to #31...

As we roll along with my recap of the 100 biggest songs on my weekly music chart for the year 2016, I'm up to part seven. You can click over to catch up on parts one, two, three, four, five, and six, along with the 25 that almost made it. I know reach the top 40...

#40 - "Just Like Fire" - P!nk
from the album Alice Through The Looking Glass (Original Soundtrack) (2016)
          Highest rank: #29 (three weeks)
          Weeks on the chart: 29
          Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10
Songwriters: Alecia Moore (P!nk), Max Martin, Karl Schuster (Shellback), Oscar Holter

It's been four years since P!nk's last studio album, but she re-emerges with a great song from a shitty movie, in this case the sequel in the Johnny Depp franchise film series for Alice In Wonderland. Her daughter and husband get cute cameos in the video, as well.

Killer lyric:  I'm walking on a wire trying to go higher,
Feels like I'm surrounded by clowns and liars,
Even when I get it all the way...

#39 - "Something In The Way You Move" - Ellie Goulding
          from the album Delirium (2015)
          Highest rank: #6 (two weeks)
Weeks on the chart (in 2016): 19 (was on for 9 weeks in 2015)
          Billboard Hot 100 peak: #43
          Songwriters: Ellie Goulding, Greg Kurstin

We heard from Ellie back at #55 with "On My Mind"; the follow-up single did just a bit better, placing in the top-40. The dance-pop nugget was able to rise were some of the current titans missed out. Last year, her contribution to the 50 Shades Of Grey movie, "Love Me Like You Do", came in at #15 for 2015...

Killer Lyric: Not one bone in your body good enough for me,
But this heart is open bloodstain on my sleeve,
When our eyes meet I can only see the end,
But tonight I'm here yours again...

#38 - "One Dance" - Drake featuring Wizkid & Kyla
         from the album Views (2016)
         Highest rank: #3 (two weeks)
         Weeks on the chart: 21
         Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1
Songwriters: Aubrey Drake Graham (Drake), Paul Jefferies (Nineteen85), Noah Shebib ("40"), Logan Sama, Ayodeji Balogun (Wizkid), Themba Sekowe (DJ Maphorisa), Kyla Smith (Kyla), Errol & Luke Reid Crazy Cousins)

The Canadian emo-rap star had the "song of the summer" of 2016 with this trop-house rework of an obscure neo-house song from British act Crazy Cousins & Kyla, "Do You Mind". With Nigerian DJ/producer/singer Wizkid in the mix, this track was unavoidable.

Killer lyrics: Strength and guidance,
All that I'm wishing for my friends,
Nobody makes it from my ends,
I had to bust up the silence...

#37 - "Stitches" - Shawn Mendes
          from the album Handwritten (2015)
          Highest rank: #16 (two weeks)
Weeks on the chart (in 2016): 22 (was on for 12 weeks in 2015)
          Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4
Songwriters: Danny Parker, Teddy Geiger, Daniel Kyriakides

The teenage singer's breakout radio single was co-written by Teddy Geiger, who had hit the top-40 ten years ago with "For You I Will (Confidence)". One of the former Vine star's two hits in the countdown...

Killer lyric: Got a feeling that I'm going under,
But I know that I'll make it out alive,
If I quit calling you my lover...

#36 - "T-Shirt" - Thomas Rhett
from the album Tangled Up (2015)
          Highest rank: #5 (one week)
          Weeks on the chart: 21
          Billboard Hot 100 peak: #41
Songwriters: Ashley Gorley, Shane McAnally, Luke Laird

The country-soul troubadour climbed in at #49 last year with "Make Me Wanna" (and made the also-ran list with "Crash and Burn"), and he's back for another round with this uptempo offering of clothing.

Killer lyric: Had Christmas lights in the middle of June,
All hung up like I was on you...

#35 - "Treat You Better" - Shawn Mendes
          from the album Illuminate (2016)
          Highest rank: #5 (one week)
Weeks on the chart (in 2016): 22 (still charting)
          Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6
Songwriters: Teddy Geiger, Daniel Kyriakides (Daylight), Dan Romer

The second of Shawn's singles on this year's recap was also co-written by Geiger, and led off his sophomore effort Illuminate. Pulsating and serious, he's no Vine boy anymore.

Killer lyric: When you say that he's the one that you want,
And you're spending all your time,
                     In this wrong situation,
And anytime you want it to stop...

#34 - "Good Grief" - Bastille
from the album Wild World (2016)
          Highest rank: #1 (two weeks)
Weeks on the chart (in 2016): 22 (still charting)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: did not chart, "bubbled under" at #112
          Songwriter: Dan Smith (Bastille)

British modern rock band built around singer/songwriter Dan Smith, Bastille landed a #1 hit on my chart this year with this smart rock snippet.

Killer lyric: Caught off guard by your favourite song,
I’ll be dancing at a funeral, dancing at a funeral,
Sleeping in the clothes you love,
It’s such a shame we had to see them burn, shame we had to see them burn...

#33 - "Snapback" - Old Dominion
from the album Meat and Candy (2015)
          Highest rank: #3 (two weeks)
          Weeks on the chart: 20
          Billboard Hot 100 peak: #50
Songwriters: Brad Tursi, Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen

Pop-inflected country band Old Dominion, whose breakout single "Break Up With Him" came in at #85 last year, returns with this crib of the Snapchat app on your phone to make their country sound current.

Killer lyric: Come on baby shoot a smile at me,
                    Midnight selfie on a balcony,
A little somethin' for my lock screen,
You're burnin' a hole in my pocket...

#32 - "The Fire and the Flood" - Vance Joy
from the album Dream Your Life Away (2014)
          Highest rank: #10 (one week)
Weeks on the chart (in 2016): 23 (was on for 8 weeks in 2015)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: did not chart
          Songwriters: Vance Joy, Benny Blanco

Australian singer/songwriter Joy had two songs that made the top 100 last year, "Riptide" at #55 and "Mess Is Mine" at #82. This epic folk-rock number kept the Down Under flame alight.

Killer Lyric: Since we met I feel a lightness in my step,
You’re miles away but I still feel you...

#31 - "I Took A Pill In Ibiza" - Mike Posner
from the album At Night, Alone. (2016)
          Highest rank: #8 (one week)
          Weeks on the chart: 23
          Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4
          Songwriters: Mike Posner

Courtesy of a tropical house mix be SeeB, singer/songwriter Posner returned to the American Top 40 for the first time in a long while. The American did that without even pronouncing the resort island/town like.

Killer lyric:  I took a pill in Ibiza,
To show Avicii I was cool,
And when I finally got sober, felt ten years older,
But fuck it, it was something to do...

That's all for now...I'll be back tomorrow with a death wish, some bottled refreshment, and more.
