This week there are ten new songs, starting with a band from Denmark that's been having much success in Britain. Alphabeat's third single from their eponymic debut album, "Boyfriend", followed their "Fascination" and "10000 Nights" into the top-20 in the UK, and with good cause. The retro-early-80's style if great in its own right, but former Stock-Aiken-Waterman mixer Pete Hammond was called in to give the tune it's own Bananarama-esque makeover. Awesomely fun, and my pick hit of the week, and the video is tops too, with the plucked from the past dancers and cassettes of doom....
Next up is actress/singer/tabloid fodder/celebre-lesbian Lindsay Lohan proving that a cute danceable song and pro-Tools can craft anybody into a hit. "Bossy" is a by-numbers but enjoyable dance tune, and Mike Rizzo's remix is the best, with his trademark drama synths and pop sensibility. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a very respectable return to the radio for Lohan.
Chicago neo-punk band Rise Against's third major-label album, Appeal To Reason, comes out next week, and the first single from the album, "Re-Education (Through Labor)" is their first appearance on my list (two previous songs, "Prayer For The Refugee" and "The Good Left Undone" almost made it). Staying true to their leftist political views, the song rails against the current world evils done in the name of religion and greed. Cool video starting with a quote from John Kennedy...
American Idol winner David Cook's "The Time Of My Life" drops from the top-10 this week, so it's only fitting that his season's runner-up, David Archuleta, debuts with his first post-idol original song, "Crush". It's a lot more polished and adult than I had expected, and the production is very safely in the boy-band ballad mode his audience is looking for when his debut album drops in November...
