Songoftheday 5/23/18 - Mornings alone when you come home, I breathe a little faster every time we're together...
"Just Another Day" - Jon Secada
from the album Jon Secada (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 30
Today's song of the day comes from Cuban-American singer/songwriter Jon Secada, who was born in Havana but in his youth called Miami his home. A learned musician, he got his big break when Latin music icon Gloria Estefan hired him as a background singer. He ended up co-writing one of her #1 hits, "Coming Out Of The Dark", which topped the American pop Hot 100 in the spring of 1991. The following year, Secada released his debut single "Just Another Day". Written by Jon with Miguel Morejon, and the midtempo and moody dance-pop number ended up a huge success, spending more weeks in the American Top-40 (30) than any other single that year. Emilio Estefan produced the track, while Gloria repays the favor by singing backup herself...
"Just Another Day" became Jon's first and biggest pop hit, reaching the top five in August of 1992. The song spent two weeks at #2 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the single was #1 for a month in Sweden, and reached the top ten in Canada (#2), the Netherlands (#2), Switzerland (#2), Germany (#3), Ireland (#4), Norway (#4), the UK (#5), New Zealand (#5), and Austria (#5). It also got to #12 in Australia.

There was a second version of the music video, which lost most of the Miami city scenes and featured Jon with a band (and Gloria singing at the end)...here's a side by side of the two...
Here's Jon appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to promote the single in 1992..
Jon set a precedent when he released his debut album in May of 1992 by simultaneously putting out both an English-language and a fully Spanish version separately. The Spanish version of "Just Another Day", "Otro DÃa Más Sin Verte", with lyrics redone by Gloria Estefan, spent five weeks at #1 on Billboard's Latin Songs chart...
