Songoftheday 1/7/17 - Though it hurts and we both know the time we spend together's gonna fly, and everything you do to me is gonna feel so right...
"Here We Are" - Gloria Estefan
from the album Cuts Both Ways (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11
Today's song of the day comes from Cuban-American pop singer Gloria Estefan, whose first album without the Miami Sound Machine on top billing, Cuts Both Ways, had earned her a #1 hit with "Don't Wanna Lose You" and an almost-top-tenner with "Get On Your Feet". The third single from the record would have her back with another ballad. "Here We Are", written by Gloria and produced by her husband Emilio along with nominal MSM members Clay Ostwald and Jorge Casas, was marked by the three-note guitar riff that starts off the record, but it's the lyrics, describing a love between people who can't commit (an affair? exes getting back?) that gives the song its nuance...
"Here We Are" became the third top-40 pop hit from Cuts Both Ways in March of 1990. The song went all the way to #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, spending five weeks, the most out of all of her singles. Internationally, the record reached the top ten in Canada (#7) and Ireland (#7), got to #13 in the Netherlands, and #23 in the UK.
Two more singles were released from Cuts Both Ways, and both will be featured as "robbed hits" in the upcoming months.

Here's Gloria on tour with the song in 1991...
...and again on a Live By Request performance for the A&E channel...
and finally, from Gloria's stint in Vegas in 2003...
Up tomorrow: Comely dance music trio are infallible.
