Songoftheday 10/9/16 - So tired of broken hearts and losing at this game, before I start this dance I take a chance in telling you I want more than just romance...

"Cherish" - Madonna
from the album Like A Prayer (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's song of the day comes from Madonna, whose landmark album Like A Prayer had already rewarded her with a #1 hit with the title track then a #2 follow-up with "Express Yourself". The third single released from the album mirrored the bouncy exuberance of her previous "True Blue". "Cherish", written by the artist with Patrick Leonard, featured a black-and-white video shot by Herb Ritts on the beach in California, and remains one of her iconic clips that didn't rely on a "gimmick", well, save the "mermen" frolicking in the waves...

"Cherish" climbed all the way to the runner-up spot on the American pop chart in October of 1989. The song became Madonna's third #1 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") chart, where it stayed for two weeks. Internationally, the single went to #1 in Canada, and made the top-5 in Ireland (#2), the UK (#3), Italy (#3), Australia (#4), and New Zealand (#5).
